This is an awesome laptop. I’ve never had a full HD laptop before and this thing has a gorgeous 1920 x 1080 display along with the 1 gigabyte GPU. The one GREAT THING about this laptop (and probably any in this series of Asus laptops) is that the display itself has a MATTE finish and IS VERY BEAUTIFUL. You know how on some laptops you have to keep moving the display back and forth for optimal lighting? Not on this one! The color/contrast changes between levels is rather minor compared to most laptops I’ve seen. The specs are obviously some of the best you can find for this price point. Comes with blu ray software and drive for playback and it does work. The speakers are interesting. They’re really trying to make good speakers but unfortunately they focused a lot on making them louder. The problem is sometimes it becomes SO LOUD that it distorts sometimes. This really only happens though when you mess with the audio settings and get the treble too high. It’s a nice try but they’ve still got work to do on creating good quality speakers. But the 6 gigs of RAM, i5 processor are all over 7.0 on the WIndows experience index. All in all this is hands down the best laptop I’ve owned, and the display is the best I’ve seen on a laptop. The keyboard is okay.. I think I like this style of keys better than the new chick let style. The track-pad I really don’t use much because I use mobile mouse. The bottom line is this laptop makes a good gaming laptop and desktop replacement and with the full 1080p HD you’re really not missing much from a full desktop. I also like that it’s 15.6 inches rather than a huge 17 inch beast.Buying any of these ASUS’s in this series is gonna be worth it. If you can afford the higher end one I’d go for it. But this one is also epic considering the price.
Awesome screen, awesome value, December 13, 2011
If you’re looking for a laptop sub-$1k with a wonderful screen, look no further. Compared to the generic 1366×768 stuff that is so common today, this 1080p screen is amazing. It has a matte finish, very good viewing angles, better than average contrast (no wash-out or frowny faces as seen on your average glossy screen), and is very bright. The CPU is more than enough for both daily tasks, light gaming, and BD playback. The GPU handles Trine, Torchlight, Serious Sam HD, The Witcher (not #2), and others in 1080p at or very near 60fps with high settings. More demanding games like MW3 or Skyrim are playable but require dropping the resolution a bit, but no fear, this screen scales very well. The GPU also overclocks pretty well and can give you an extra 10-20% in games, but isn’t necessary most of the time.It runs cool and quiet and the aesthetics are top-notch. There is VERY little keyboard flex, the hinges are strong, and the touchpad is very responsive with easy to click buttons. I upgraded it to 8GB of DDR3 1333 and an Intel X-25M G2 SSD and it flies.
